Create an Intent

Intents interpret what the end-user wants and fulfils that need.

In the following step-by-step example, we will -

Create a Standard Intent

A Standard Intent is generally used when you want to return a one-off response to an end-user's question or request.

On the Intents list page, click Create Intent

Choose the Standard intent-type in the sidebar

Enter in the sidebar -

  • Save Location (Folder & Subfolder) Select the Folder & Subfolder as a location to store the intent (in the Standard intent folders) or Choose Skip to store the intent in a default Unsorted folder (in the Standard intent folders)

    You will be able to select folders later when creating or editing the intent

Enter in the Training Material section -

  • Main User Input The first end-user 'utterance', or question/request/statement applicable to this intent This is used to identify the intent on the Intents list page but has the same 'weight' or relevance as any of the alternative user inputs (below) Must be, along with the alternative user inputs, unique to the intent

  • Alternative User Input Add an alternative user input that represents a different way in which the end-user would request the same information or service Add as many alternatives as needed - a minimum of two are required although, depending on the intent, more are better

Enter in the Response (Standard) section -

Use this section to add the response to the end-user. This is could be plain text, but the response editor also allows you to add links, images, or even add HTML.

Enter in the Details section -

  • Save Location (Folder & Subfolder) Select the Folder & Subfolder as a location to store the intent, or leave in the Unsorted folders

  • Message Notes Any notes you may need for internal use

  • Category The category that you want to assign to the intent Effectively another way of sorting your intents, beyond the folder structure - useful for very large sets of intents

    Start typing in the Search or Create field to either -

    • Select an existing Category
    • Create a new Category

Click Create Intent

Your new Intent will be shown on the Intents list page

Create a Flow Intent

A Flow Intent is created much like a Standard Intent, but instead of returning a simple response, it triggers a Flow.

On the Intents list page, click Create Intent

Choose the Flow intent-type in the sidebar

Enter in the sidebar -

  • Save Location (Folder & Subfolder) Select the Folder & Subfolder as a location to store the intent (in the Standard intent folders) or Choose Skip to store the intent in a default Unsorted folder (in the Standard intent folders)

    You will be able to select folders later when creating or editing the intent

Enter in the Response (Standard) section -

  • Flow Name of the flow you wish the intent to trigger

    Search & Create field In this field you can -

    • Click to select an existing flow from the dropdown list.
    • Start typing the name of an existing flow to find it quickly. Click to select the desired flow when it appears.
    • Type the name of a flow that you wish to create. Click 'Create New Flow: [flow name]' to create the new flow.

You can open the flow that this intent will trigger direct from this page by clicking Go To Flow Editor. In order to add any other details to your newly-created intent (see below), you can come back to edit it later.

If you created a flow using the Search & Create field, you will be asked to save the intent by clicking Save & Switch. This will save the intent and open the selected flow - see Create a simple Flow for more on this. In order to add any other details to your newly-created intent (see below), you can come back to edit it later.

Create a Small Talk Intent

A Small Talk Intent is much like a Standard Intent, in that it returns a simple response, but is intended to handle the chit-chat, the pleasantaries, and connecting pieces of a conversation rather than the brand-specific/action-based ones that you will create using the other intent-types.

Follow the steps set out in the Create a Standard Intent section, but choose the Small Talk intent-type. Small Talk intents are saved in their own folder structure, separate from Standard intents.
